Windows Recall announced as always-on screenshot history on Copilot+ PCs
The market's verdict: +2.4% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
Recall, announced in May 2024 for Copilot+ PCs, takes screenshots of nearly everything on your screen and makes them searchable. It was originally on by default, and researchers quickly showed that the early version's database could be read by other software running on the machine. A UK regulator started asking questions. Microsoft delayed the launch and made it opt in, then shipped it anyway. Fans and critics agree on exactly one thing. It remembers.
This one is officially acknowledged.
They did it more than once
The dream of a helpful watcher never died; it just got a camera. Twenty-seven years later.
One company quietly holding all your data was simply ahead of its time, twice.
