The market's verdict: +27.8% on MSFT in the week after.

Status: Fixed. Working as intended, eventually.

What actually happened

Starting July 26, 2026, a failing licensing service left Xbox consoles unable to sign in or launch games for roughly seventeen hours, and, in the part everyone remembers, even physical disc games refused to start, with Xbox's own status page warning that disc based titles might not play. The discourse wrote itself: the disc, the last physical proof of ownership, had quietly been phoning home all along. Xbox's CTO later explained discs "shouldn't have been affected" by the saved entitlements check, which is a sentence that concedes the entire argument. In 2013 Microsoft promised discs work offline. It took thirteen years to break that promise all at once.

This one is officially acknowledged.

They did it more than once

Before that: Xbox One: a console that assumed the internet never sleeps (May 2013)

2013: they promised discs work offline. 2026: the discs called home anyway.
