Status: Stood by it. Working as intended™

What actually happened

Windows Me reached stores on September 14, 2000, the last Windows built on DOS foundations. It froze, crashed and clashed with drivers so dependably that PC World ranked it fourth on its worst tech products of all time list, where readers had already renamed it the Mistake Edition. Its flagship feature, System Restore, arrived with bugs of its own, which is a very Windows Me sentence. Microsoft pulled it from shelves thirteen months later, the day Windows XP shipped. Support ended in 2006. The nickname is still working.

This one is officially acknowledged.

They did it more than once

Later, again: The Start menu went to the farm upstate (Oct 2012)

ME made people scared to upgrade; Windows 8 made them scared to click.
