Windows 7 retired with a full-screen goodbye you had to click through

Windows 7 support ended January 14, 2020 with a takeover nag

The market's verdict: +2.0% on MSFT in the week after.

Status: Stood by it. Working as intended™

What actually happened

On January 14, 2020, Microsoft ended free security updates for Windows 7 while a huge share of the world's PCs still ran it, and marked the occasion with a full screen notification that, per Microsoft's own support page, would remain on screen until the user interacted with one of its options. The OS that people had clung to for a decade because they liked it got sent off with a modal dialog. Five years later the same production ran again for Windows 10, with the same reviews.

This one is officially acknowledged.

They did it more than once

Later, again: Windows 10 is done. The ransom note is $30. (Oct 2025)

Every five and a half years: the same invoice, the same full-screen farewell.
