What actually happened

In June 2026, Microsoft confirmed that permanently deleting files from the Recycle Bin showed the internal filename, a dollar-sign gibberish string like $R3F2X7.docx, instead of the real name, on every supported version of Windows at the same time, client and server alike. Nothing was lost and nothing was corrupted; the confirmation dialogs were simply speaking their internal monologue out loud. It is the most harmless incident on this site, and arguably the most honest.

This one is officially acknowledged.
