Mixer: signed the biggest streamer on Earth, turned off the lights ten months later
Microsoft shut Mixer down and handed partners to Facebook Gaming
The market's verdict: +1.7% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
Microsoft paid a reported twenty to thirty million dollars to move Ninja, the biggest streamer on Earth, from Twitch to Mixer in August 2019. Ten months later, in June 2020, the whole platform shut down. Streamers were offered relocation packages to Facebook Gaming, the one destination Ninja immediately turned down. The Twitch competitor's final act was donating its audience to Facebook. Ninja and Shroud went back to Twitch as free agents, richer and wiser.
This one is officially acknowledged.
