Your processor is unsupported now, says the update that broke your PC
August 2023 updates caused UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR blue screens on MSI boards
The market's verdict: +0.6% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
The August 2023 cumulative updates blue screened a wave of machines at boot with an UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR stop code, overwhelmingly on PCs with MSI Intel 600 and 700 series motherboards. Owners could not get into Windows at all until they uninstalled the update from recovery or reflashed their BIOS, which is a fun activity to discover at 8 in the morning. Microsoft said it was investigating and notably declined to say the update had caused anything. MSI shipped BIOS fixes in early September, which is as close to a confession as the summer got.
This one is well documented.
