Internet Explorer is retired; the web sends its regards
Internet Explorer 11 desktop app retired on June 15, 2022
The market's verdict: +3.8% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
On June 15, 2022, after more than twenty-six years, Microsoft retired the Internet Explorer 11 desktop app, disabling it on current Windows 10 versions and redirecting stragglers to Microsoft Edge, whose IE mode quietly runs the old engine for the enterprise apps that never moved on. Announced in May 2021, the retirement came with a farewell blog post about the future of the web, a sentence IE6 spent a decade making funnier. The browser that won a war, then froze the web in place and billed the industry rent, finally surrendered to one of its own successors. Edge carries the name now, on a Chromium engine, which is its own kind of eulogy.
This one is officially acknowledged.
