The new Edge arrived uninvited, by design

What actually happened

In June 2020, Microsoft began automatically delivering the new Chromium Edge through Windows Update to Windows 10 machines, and later to Windows 7 and 8.1, replacing the old Edge whether anyone had asked for it and with no uninstall. The company that spent the nineties in court over a browser bundle had rediscovered the technique, this time with a decade of antitrust settlement behind it and a support page explaining that this was different. The browser is good. The delivery method was a flashback.

This one is well documented.

They did it more than once

Before that: Microsoft won the browser war and stopped making browsers (Aug 2001)

First they bundled it, then they forced it. Same instinct, twenty years apart.
