What actually happened
Cortana reached iOS and Android years after Siri and the Google Assistant, fought hard for a distant third place, and then on March 31, 2021 the mobile apps stopped working worldwide and left the app stores. Microsoft had announced the retreat the previous July, explaining that Cortana was becoming a productivity feature of Microsoft 365 rather than a consumer assistant, which is where assistants go to become meeting summaries. Reminders and data tied to the phone apps were cut off with them. Five years of fighting the smartphone assistants ended with a support document and a new career in scheduling.
