One config change took down Xbox, Starbucks, Costco and an airline
October 2025 Azure Front Door DNS failure knocked out Microsoft and half the internet
The market's verdict: -5.1% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
On October 29, 2025, an inadvertent configuration change broke Azure Front Door's DNS and took Microsoft 365, Xbox, Minecraft and a generous slice of the non-Microsoft internet, including Starbucks, Costco, Capital One and Alaska Airlines, down with it. Downdetector peaked near twenty thousand reports, and recovery stretched late into the evening. Two weeks after charging people $30 to keep Windows 10 patched, the cloud that DNS answer came from forgot its own name for a few hours. The postmortem promised processes; the internet wrote jokes.
This one is officially acknowledged.
