Azure took a routine update and fell down a well
July 2024 Azure Central US outage knocked out Teams, DevOps, Xbox and Minecraft
The market's verdict: -3.3% on MSFT in the week after.
What actually happened
Starting late on July 18, 2024, a routine fleet update in Azure's Central US region deployed an allowlist configuration that quietly blocked the very connections it was supposed to allow, and for most of a day Azure management, DevOps, Teams, OneDrive and pieces of Xbox and Minecraft went dark. It ran the day before the CrowdStrike incident, so the industry got a rehearsal nobody wanted and Microsoft got a double feature. The root cause summary reads like a haiku about automation. The services recovered overnight; the analysts' keyboards took longer.
